Liberation 75th Anniversary Mural Project

The images below depict the final results for the Liberation 75th Anniversary Mural Project 2020. The project gave 4 artists the opportunity to paint directly on to the gallery walls, responding to the theme of Liberation in 36hrs. I was very lucky to be chosen once again to take part in this challenge (my earlier piece from 2014 is pictured at the bottom of the page). Having been born in Jersey, images of the liberation of Jersey from Nazi occupation are incrained in my mind and so I chose to explore additional concepts and time periods coming from the female perspective, my perspective. I took inspiration from the Land Girls, treatment of women who developed relationships with German soliders, chiefly having their heads shaved publicly and the feminist movement, to name a few. I want to create an educational piece, that was not obvious and loaded with symbolism for people to discover themselves. Mixing contemporary with historical and also bibical references. The title of the work was the 'Dance of the Mary's' in part poking fun at the two characters in the bible with this same name. Which for me is a characterisation women are still measured against today. This work was displayed fro a few months, due to the global pandemic and then painted over once the gallery reopened in the later part of 2020.
